Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

8th September 2022

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Taking the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth is the longest-reigning British monarch having reigned for more than 70 years.

The thoughts of the ϲ community are with the Royal Family at this very sad time.

We know that many of our students and staff will be upset by the news and may wish to pay their respects in some way. For those that are in Newcastle, the City Council has opened books of condolence and has invited members of the public to lay floral tributes at the Civic Centre if they wish. You can find out more on the . Other local authorities have each made similar arrangements and an has been opened on the Royal Family’s official website.

In line with the latest government guidance, it is anticipated that all upcoming university events and activities during the mourning period will go ahead as planned. Our campuses will remain open as normal.

Once arrangements for Her Majesty’s funeral are known we will review how these may affect the University’s plans and will be back in touch early next week to confirm arrangements.

We are mindful that our London campus, in particular, will face additional disruption and we will work to ensure that we support all staff and students throughout. We will be in touch with London-based colleagues and students directly about any specific arrangements.

Students and staff should look out for further updates via Northumbria Announcements emails, on the Student Portal and on the intranet.
