Ben Couture

Assistant Professor

Department: Architecture and Built Environment

Ben is aSenior Lecturer in theDepartment ofArchitecture& the Built Environment at ϲ. He is anactive designer,researcher and maker with specialisms in spatial/furniture design, exhibition-making andmodular construction. He hasabroad range of design work with anextensive portfolio of realised projects.

Prior to joining Northumbria in 2020, Ben founded Jardine Couture Ltd, which operated for 15 years in the UKand Europe providing design and production for furniture and spatial projects. The company undertook workwith national museums and numerous blue chip organisations.

Ben has ongoing involvement as a Director of3rdSpace(Sawhorse Ltd), set up in 2010, creating modular buildings and studios based on the innovative 3rdSpace Modular system. Their work has been widely featured in notable publications, including Wall Street Journal, Elle Decorationand recently 'New Work, New Workspaces' by RIBA Publications.
As part of ongoing development at Northumbria, Ben has recently gained Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Authority, and is a committee-member of the departmental Research & Knowledge Exchange group.

Ben’s research interests centre around design in the built environment; covering digital & spatial exhibition environments, intersections of art & architectural space, and modular construction.
As a practicing designer with a broad portfolio of realised works, his research specialisms draw upon practice-based methodologies. His work has been included in a number of online and print publications.
