Dr Farnoosh Farhad

Senior Lecturer

Department: Mechanical and Construction Engineering

Introduction

Dr Farnoosh Farhad is an engineering scientist and a Senior Lecturer within the Mechanical and Construction Engineering (MCE) Department at the University of Northumbria. She has received her educations in Mechanical Engineering with a BSc degree from National University in Iran (2006-2010), MSc with distinction from Newcastle University UK (2011-2012) and a PhD from National Structural Integrity Research Centre in Cambridge UK, which was fully funded by BP, TWI Ltd. and Coventry University (2016-2019).

Before her PhD study, Farnoosh joined engineering consultancies as a supervisory team member. Her experience in the industry is extremely useful in terms of understanding of real-world applications and the relevance of her research.

She was awarded the International Postgraduate Scholarship by Newcastle University (2011), the Educational Award by IMechE (2018) and the Armourers and Brasiers Travel Award by The Welding Institute (2017).

She served as the Vice-Chair for the Tipper group at TWI Ltd. in Cambridge, where she was involved in organising events and inspirational talks aimed specifically to support women in engineering in addition to promoting unconscious bias and diversity at the professional workplace.

Teaching

Her teaching experience in Mechanical Engineering subject comprises Statics module, Vehicle Dynamics, Vibrations, Strength of Materials, Machine Element Design, Engineering Mathematics, Computer-Aided three-Dimensional Design, MATLAB and Finite Element Methods.

Research Interests

Her research interests encompass Characterisation and Modelling of Materials, Fatigue and Failure, Defect and Damage evolution, Environmental Fatigue Testing including developing new Testing Apparatus, Finite Element Modelling, Medical Implants, Imaging techniques such as X-ray Tomography, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Confocal Microscopy etc.
