Charlotte Gordon

Assistant Professor

Department: Nursing, Midwifery & Health

I am a registered nurse with over 20 years clinical experience with an academic grounding in the Biological Sciences.
With significant experience in the critical care environment, I developed my career towards the management and delivery of clinical research trials across multiple clinical and disease specialities, but predominantly in the field of diabetes prevention and management. This allowed me to deliver cutting edge translational therapies to NHS patients, implementing varied research methodologies and advanced clinical skills. I have recently been appointed as NIHR North East and North Cumbria RDN strategic lead for Diabetes, Metabolic and Endocrinology research.

I have worked collaboratively across the healthcare and pharma industries both nationally and internationally for over 15 years. I continue to maintain links with industry via research collaborations in the field of diabetes health technology.

I was awarded the Alice Corey MRC research scholarship to undertake an MClinRes awarded by Newcastle University. I am currently completing my PhD exploring the user experience of glucose sensing technologies and have published work focusing on diabetes and well-being and the evolution of diabetes technologies.

I lead diabetes education at ϲ, working closely with experts in practice enabling me to maintain close links and contemporary understanding of the clinical care of people living with diabetes.

Expertise in teaching and learning practice is recognised by my award of Fellowship to the Higher Education Academy and leadership of the MSc CPD pathways in Professional Practice in Health.

I was committee member and Chair of the Royal College of Nursing National Diabetes Steering group (2019-2023), I am also a member of the European Psychosocial Aspects of Diabetes (PSAD) study group, The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network, The Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND) and Fuse (The Centre for Translational Research in Public Health), demonstrating impact and engagement, influencing policy and professional guidance at a national and international level.

I was involved in the COVID-19 national vaccination programme both as a RHCP vaccinator, and as a vaccinator educator and have collaborated on international research activities around vaccination acceptance.
