Dr Maria Aranzazu Gomez Arana

Senior Lecturer

Dr Gomez Arana joined ϲ as a Senior Lecturer in International Relations in May 2020. She has previously taught at several universities in the UK, and in 2015 she was a visiting lecturer at Bamberg University (Germany) as part of the Erasmus+ staff mobility programme.

She has published with Manchester University Press in 2017 and in 2022 (together with Dr. Maria Garcia, Bath University).

She is currently a supervisor of several PhD students and welcomes doctoral proposals in several areas, including interdisciplinary projects.

Dr. Gomez Arana is currently a Trustee and Elected Committee Member of (2019-2022) and was previously a Co-convener of European Security Working Group (2018-2020).

In addition, Dr. Gomez Arana collaborates with external partners such as and has experience as a Research Assistant and as a Research Associate as part of several projects funded by the European Commission. She has received external funding for different projects and welcomes potential collaborations in research projects that are related to her research interests.

Maria Aranzazu Gomez Arana

Dr. Gomez Arana research interests include several areas. She has published mainly on European Union External Relations towards other countries or group of countries in the Mediterranean and in Latin America. Dr. Gomez Arana has also developed in the last few years a particular focus on the connection between internal and external security matters in the European Union. In relation to Latin America, she has published on regional projects such as Mercosur or the Central American Common Market. In relation to Mediterranean countries, the countries studied include Morocco, and Syria (pre-Arab Spring).

After looking at different aspects of regional integration for over a decade, since 2016 she has researched the opposite trend paying special attention to the question of borders and the European Union in relation to Brexit, as well as Gibraltar, Libya and Catalonia. Dr. Gomez Arana is currently looking at sociopolitical and economic aspects of diplomacy and vacinnes in Latin America within the context of Covid-19.
