Richard qualified professionally in 1997 and joined the University as part of The Construction Group within The School of The Built and Natural Environment in March 2008 as a Senior Lecturer, following spells as a guest and part time lecturer during 2005 and 2007.

He has had a successful career in private, public and the third sector as a Client and Contractor with senior roles in Construction, Maintenance and Facilities/Asset Management; and non-executive roles across the region and nationally , predominantly in social housing and community investment projects. Richard has also worked as a Consultant and Advisor, was Managing Director of his own consultancy, and still retains business links as a partner in commercial and residential property management; through the positions he holds within professional institutions, and as Vice Chairman and Senior Director of Derwentside Homes Ltd.

Richard has been fortunate to lead and be part of award winning teams in construction and business both regionally and nationally.

His favourite cities are Barcelona and Edinburgh for their architecture and cultures; and he has developed an interest in the heritage and culture of the Middle East. He enjoys learning from students.
