Dr Lorraine Johnston

Associate Professor

Department: Newcastle Business School

Dr Lorraine Johnston(PhD, CMI; SFHEA; FHEA) is Associate Professor of International Public Leadership & Policy in the department of LHRM. Previously awarded a highly competitive ESRC scholarship she holds a Ph.D. in urban regeneration, local government, and politics fromNewcastle University, Global Urban Research Unit. At Newcastle Business School,Faculty of Business and Law, Lorraine set up and voluntarily leads thePublic Policy & Public Management(3PM) Research Interest Group in 2012 to support an Internal & External Speaker Series of leading researchers. More recent roles include Faculty Strategic Coordinator representing Faculty Research Interest Groups (RIGs) on the Departmental Research and Knowledge Exchange Group (DRaKE).

As alead member of theResearch England Research Team(with Prof Shutt and Prof Liddle and Ph.D. researchers, Sarah Davie and Nathan Pellow) she is currently researching a comparative study of Newcastle, London, and Amsterdam. The comparative study takes an evidenced-based approach to university city-wide economic development. To support this project, Lorraine recently secured a book contract onPlace and City Leadershipwith Emerald Publishers. Her most recent research includes two co-authored monographs:

(2020) Leading Local Government: A Place for Elected Mayors? with Emerald Publishing.

Lorraine is a key member of theFuture Leaders, Regional Studies; Regional ScienceInitiative. More recently, supported by thePublic Administration Committee Learned Society(with colleagues at Birmingham, Staffordshire, and Edgehill universities) to lead on aDiversity & Inclusion Panellooking specifically at issues of inclusion, identity, andequality in a context of public administration.
