Dr Kyriakos Kotsoglou

Associate Professor

Department: Northumbria Law School

Dr. Kyriakos N. Kotsoglou joined ϲ as a Senior Lecturer in Law in September 2019. Previously he held academic positions in Lausanne (2019), Liverpool Hope (2016-2018) and Freiburg/Germany (2011-2016). Kyri is a Criminal Evidence and Criminal Law scholar with a special interest for evidence & proof and (analytic) legal theory. He has 8 years of teaching experience in higher education in the U.K. and Germany. Kyri employs bottom-up teaching methods exploring ways to capture (and utilise) discussion dynamics in the classroom. He is a Fellow of the HEA since 2018.

Kyri’s scholarly work has been cited extensively by the most authoritative commentaries on the German Penal Code and Criminal Procedure. His analysis on criminal evidence has been cited by the German Federal Court of Justice (BGH). The Greek Court of Appeal (Athens) has cited and quoted extensively his work on DNA-evidence in a high-profile case, which led to the acquittal of a (falsely) convicted appellant. His work has prompted, twice, a direct reply. Kyri is currently working on the doctrinal and normative framework underlying expert witness testimony, the various issues around reverse onus clauses and the use of statistical evidence in criminal process. Kyri is a member of the Lausanne-based interdisciplinary group NORMDECS doing research on decision-structures and decision-making processes esp. in the field of expert witness testimony.

Kyri is the Programme Leader for the Mental Health Law Linked Awards at the ϲ School of Law.

Finally yet importantly, Kyri regularly provides expert advice to law practitioners and companies (e.g. PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2018-2019). Furthermore, he disseminates knowledge by organising seminars for law practitioners and members of the judiciary.

Kyri teaches and publishes in English, German and Greek.
