Dr Hoang Nguyen

Assistant Professor

Department: Mechanical and Construction Engineering

Hoang Nguyen is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering. Hoang is a structural engineer with a background in value engineering and structural analysis of residential houses and office buildings. Prior to joining Northumbria, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the School of Engineering, University of Glasgow where he worked on the fracture analyses and structural integrity of graphite bricks in UK nuclear power plants within a project funded by EDF Energy. Before that, Hoang finished his PhD at ϲ where his work focused on the numerical prediction of structural/mechanical behaviours of functionally graded microstructures by means of generalised continua and isogeometric analysis. He also worked for more than three years in the industry before pursuing an academic career.

His research interests include:

  • Data-driven predictions of materials and structures
  • Structural engineering and optimisation
  • Structural integrity
  • Finite element methods
  • Mechanics of microstructures
  • High-performance computing
