Sex is an under-investigated area of sport and exercise science, with current understanding of training a patient/athlete based predominantly on data from male populations. In this lecture, we will cover how sex influences physiology and exercise performance, then outline how staff and students as Northumbria are investigating how sex and hormones influence acute and chronic training responses.

Exercise is one of the most important aspects of physiotherapy. It is not only important to prevent disease, but also treat disease. All physiotherapists need to be able to utilise exercise as a tool, within musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions, across all ages. This talk discusses how we use strength and conditioning to help patients across many areas.

Exercise is known to be beneficial for mental health. For example, taking part in exercise often makes us feel good and helps us to become more focussed. In this talk, we will explore what happens in the brain in response to exercise that influences the way we feel and think. This topic encompasses aspects of exercise psychology and physiology.
