The qualification is ideal for managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues.

The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study, for example the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, which is also offered by ϲ.

These nationally and internationally recognised qualifications demonstrate to employers that holders possess the core professional knowledge and competence in health and safety. Holders can expect enhanced career prospects and a range of new opportunities.

The block release mode is ideal for those who wish to get their qualification in a short period of time. We also offer part-time and distance learning options as well as other qualifications in health and safety, such as the NEBOSH Diploma and an MSc in Health Safety and Environment (from September 2016).

The NEBOSH Certificate is a widely recognised and respected qualification and will be delivered by highly qualified, experienced tutors over 3 units;

  • NGC1: Management of Health and Safety
  • GC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards
  • GC3: Health and Safety Practical Application

NGC1: Management of Health and Safety
This module will begin with a general introduction to health and safety management. The module will then begin to explore policy considerations, organisational requirements, health and safety culture (and its promotion), methods for assessing risk, principles of control, incident investigation and techniques/strategies for conducting reviews and auditing.

GC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards

This module examines each of the key groups of hazards likely to be encountered in the workplace, namely those arising from: movement of people and vehicles, manual and mechanical handling, work equipment, electrical equipment, fire, chemical and biological agents, physical hazards, psychological issues and construction activities. Suitable control methods and strategies are discussed for each group of hazards.

GC3: Health and Safety Practical Application

The module prepares students to:

  • Carry out, unaided, a safety inspection of a workplace, identifying the more common hazards, deciding whether they are adequately controlled and, where necessary, suggesting appropriate and cost-effective remedial action.

To prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take appropriate action, explaining why such action is needed (including reference to possible breaches of legislation) and identifying, with due consideration of reasonable practicability, the remedial measures that should be implemented.
