The Professor Richard Terry Memorial Scholarships in Humanities for September 2024

Northumbria is pleased to announce The Professor Richard Terry Memorial Scholarships. The scholarships have been set up to provide support for talented Humanities students wishing to study at ��ϲ��. It commemorates Northumbria academic, Professor Richard Terry, whose teaching and mentorship inspired many of his colleagues and students during his 13 years at the University.

The scholarship will award two Humanities students with £4,000, paid in instalments* throughout years one, two and three.

Richard was a passionate literary scholar, renowned within the field of Eighteenth Century Studies. During his time at Northumbria, he served as Head of Humanities, Associate Dean for Research, and academic lead for Arts and Humanities Research Council Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership.

This scholarship would have been very close to Richard’s heart as he was passionate about his work and enjoyed nurturing young talent and seeing others discover a shared interest at the start of their academic journey.

His wife, Carol, and his wider family believe the scholarship provides a fitting legacy and they are excited about the opportunity it presents. Richard would have shared a strong desire to see students from under-represented groups get the opportunity to study at Northumbria and ensure that financial barriers, such as reduced government funding, fear of debt and low family income, are not the deciding factors when choosing to study.

Terms and Conditions

To be eligible for The Professor Richard Terry Memorial Scholarships you must:

Be a UK/Home applicant - This includes students domiciled in Jersey, Guernsey, The Channel Islands, Ireland and Isle of Man
Have a household income of under £35,000
Apply and enrol to study on a Full-Time Undergraduate Humanities course* at the Newcastle Upon Tyne campus, starting in September 2024
Choose Northumbria as your firm choice by 06 June 2024
Meet all individual entry requirements
Be a self-funded student (ie. not in receipt of sponsorship or other funding for the payment of fees, such as employer funding)
Apply for one or more elements of the Government Student Finance package (for example, Tuition Fee loan, Maintenance loan) in order for your application to be means-tested
Register with Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Wales (SFW) or Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI)
As a Scottish student, register with Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and apply to be means-tested for maintenance funding, in order that SASS can send your data to Student Finance England
Agree to share consent via your Government Finance Provider with ��ϲ��

Eligible courses*

Important Information

The students selected for a Professor Richard Terry Scholarship will not be eligible for any other Undergraduate scholarship schemes
If you apply and are successful for more than one scholarship, you will automatically receive the highest value scholarship
The Professor Richard Terry Scholarship is awarded as cash
*Payments will be made as £335 (25%) by the end of November 2024, £335 (25%) by the end of February 2025 and £665 (50%) by the end of May 2025
The award will be made for three years maximum
The award is provided on an annual basis, on the condition the successful students progress to the next year of study
No award will be made in placement year, or should you resit a year
If you are undertaking a Level 3 (Foundation Year or Extended Degree) qualification, you are not eligible for the scholarship
If you are progressing from a Foundation Year studied at Northumbria or another institution, you are not eligible for the scholarship
The successful students will be required to send a thank you letter to the donor
A progress update for the donor will be requested at the end of each year of study
If you do not provide a thank you letter and progress updates to the donor, the scholarship may be withdrawn
If you defer your place at ��ϲ�� before the scholarship has been paid, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn
If you decide to leave your course after the scholarship payment has been made, the University will not make efforts to reclaim the amount
If you are required to resit your first year, the scholarship will not be paid again
The University's decision is final and cannot be challenged; there is no right of appeal

Selection Process

There is a competitive selection process for this scholarship scheme. Applicants need to apply via online written . In no more than 3000 characters (500 words); 'How will this Award support your aspirations to succeed in Higher Education?' - Applications will be considered on the strength of response against a marking criteria.
We will let you know the outcome of your application following results day in August 2024.
