Who is the course for?

This upper-intermediate full-time programme is ideal if your academic qualifications meet the requirements for your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course, but your English language level falls below the entry requirements of the academic course you wish to join.

What will I learn and how will this prepare me for employment / further study?

The learning on the Pre-sessional English Language and Study Skills programme will develop your communication skills in English, both individually and in group situations, including presenting and communicating your ideas both orally and in writing. Preparing you to successfully study within a UK university and within a globally diverse classroom or workplace.

To successfully participate in UK academic environment, we prioritise active engagement through interactive sessions and collaborative group work. Our instructors employ a task-based learning approach, ensuring practical application of language skills in academic contexts. Technology is seamlessly integrated, offering online resources, language tools, and virtual collaboration platforms to enrich your learning experience.

The Pre-sessional English Language and Study Skills programme is your key to a successful academic journey at ϲ. Our experienced instructors provide personalised support, develop your confidence in your language abilities and introduce you to the facilities and services available at the university to enrich your overall learning experience. By choosing our programme, you invest in a solid foundation for academic success, forming connections that extend beyond the classroom.

How will I be assessed on the programme?

Throughout your learning, you will develop your English language skills within reading, writing, speaking and listening, in addition to final examinations that assess your overall performance against the programme learning outcomes.

At the end of the programme, you will receive an equivalent grade to IELTS for each skill of reading, writing, speaking and listening based on your final exam performance, which will be used to determine progression onto your target degree programme based on the programme’s English language entry requirements.

In the event you do not achieve your target grades, you will be offered the opportunity to continue learning on the programme, the dates of which will depend on the next intake for your target programme.

Standard Entry

  • If you require IELTS 6.0 overall, minimum 5.5 for your degree programme:

Minimum entry requirements IELTS 5.5, with no component lower than 5.0*

 

  • If you require IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 5.5 for your degree programme:

Minimum entry requirements IELTS 6.0, with no component lower than 5.0*

 

  • If you require IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 for your degree programme:

Minimum entry requirements IELTS 6.0, with no component lower than 5.5*

 

*The University accepts a large number of UK and International Qualifications in place of IELTS. You can find details of acceptable tests and the required grades in our English Language section: 

Fees and Funding 2025/26 Entry

UK Fee in Year 1: TBC

* You should expect to pay tuition fees for every year of study. The University may increase fees in the second and subsequent years of your course at our discretion in line with any inflationary or other uplift, as decided by the UK Government, up to the maximum amount for fees permitted by UK law or regulation for that academic year. To give students an indication of the likely scale of any future increase, the UK government has recently suggested that increases may be linked to RPIX ( Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments)

Interactive Academic Discourse: Engaging in Lectures and Seminars (Core,0 Credits)

This module will develop your ability to comprehend extended spoken English, as well as interact and express yourself confidently in academic contexts. You will learn strategies to identify cues and inference to strengthen your comprehension of live and broadcast academic speech, such as lectures and multimedia. You will also develop vocabulary and language strategies that build your confidence to speak at length in English, such as for presentations and debates, in addition to real-time interaction in group discussions. By the end of the module, you will have the skills to engage in academic discourse on your chosen degree.

This module will refine academic literacy—essential for effective engagement in academia. You will develop skills to comprehend, analyse, and critically evaluate complex academic texts, refining written expression within formal discourse. The emphasis will be on elevating your English language skills to an upper-intermediate (B2) level to allow independent engagement with scholarly work once on your degree programme. By the end of the module, you will possess foundational skills for successful engagement with textual discourse and for effective written communication within your chosen field.

An introduction to Academic Projects and Working Collaboratively in Intercultural Contexts (Core,0 Credits)

The aim of the module is to develop your interaction and mediation skills, as well as your sociolinguistic awareness. You will learn key concepts and vocabulary about academic projects and embark on a collaborative project that reflects on the concept of culture. The collaborative project will develop skills in group work and your ability to communicate ideas effectively in English. Using reflective model(s), you will continually reflect on your communication skills and how culture impacts on the ability to communicate effectively, fostering independence for developing your English language skills and engaging with peers on your chosen degree programme.
